Planting Materials (Propagule) Types List

The form or structure of the planting material used for vegetative establishment. The propagule types in VegSpec are seed, bare root, sprigs, container, cuttings, bulbs, corms, sod, and tubers.

Bare Root
A planting material consisting of a plant with exposed roots.
Bulb
An underground food storage organ that is essentially a modified bud consisting of fleshy leaves that surround and are attached to a small stem.
Container
A planting material already growing in a pot.
Corm
A vertically oriented, thickened food storage stem that is usually enveloped by a few papery nonfunctional leaves.
Cutting
Description not yet developed.
Seed
A mature ovule containing an embryo and bound by a protective seedcoat.
Sod
A collection of stoloniferous or rhizomatous grasses that form a turf.
Sprig
A portion of of the stem and root of grass.
Tuber
A swollen, fleshy, underground stem.
